Estimates for a mid-size hobby machine (Shapeoko, X-Carve, Onefinity class). Scaling all three axes together keeps the depth in proportion; for thinner stock scale Z on its own. Hardwoods with fine grain (cherry, hard maple, walnut, basswood) hold this detail best. Check your exact setup in Will it cut, free, nothing uploaded.

How we estimate carve time

Finishing is one raster pass over the whole carving with the ball nose shown, at 10% stepover and half of a 1,800 mm/min (71 in/min) feed. Roughing assumes about 45% of the block above the base is waste, cleared with the end mill shown at 40% stepover and 3 mm per pass (1.5 mm for the 1/8 in end mill) at the full feed. The model leaves out acceleration, tool changes and moves between passes, so a real job usually takes somewhat longer. Times are rounded to 5 minutes.

Opens directly in Aspire, VCarve Pro, Carveco, ArtCAM and Fusion 360, and in any slicer for 3D printing. For a laser, the relief is first turned into a greyscale depth image, which our Laser Studio app does from this STL. STL only, no OBJ or DXF: the DXF files used in CNC work hold 2D outlines, not the 3D relief surface. Scale it to whatever panel you are cutting. Scaling all three axes together keeps the depth in proportion; scale Z on its own for a shallower carve. How to open it in your software.

About this design

πŸš‚ Capture The Rugged Soul Of Industrial Heritage Imagine the raw power of the steam era brought to life in deep, textured grain as a centerpiece on your workshop wall. This design transforms standard timber into a mechanical relic that tells a story of the rails. πŸš‚ Why You’ll Love This Design This intricate relief captures the heavy, mechanical presence of a vintage freight car handbrake wheel and its anchoring chain with stunning realism. The composition features a multi-layered depth where the smooth, rounded cast-iron wheel stands out against weather-beaten wood planks and heavy metal links. Dramatic shadow play and an authentic wood grain texture ensure that every CNC woodcarving relief you produce looks like a hand-carved piece of history. πŸ“ What You Receive You will receive a high-detail, production-ready bas relief STL file where all the complex 3D sculpting is already expertly finished for you. Simply import this file into Aspire, VCarve Pro, Carveco, ArtCAM, or your preferred CNC software to begin generating professional toolpaths. Please note that this is a digital product only and no physical item will be shipped to your address. πŸš‚ Meaningful Ways To Use It This design is the perfect focal point for an industrial-themed man cave, a historic train station renovation project, or as a unique gift for a railroad enthusiast. Use it to create striking architectural wall panels, decorative furniture inserts, or commemorative plaques that celebrate the golden age of steam transport. πŸ› οΈ Carve With Confidence Every element of this relief has been sculpted with clean separation to ensure your CNC router captures the finest details without any muddiness or toolpath errors. The deep relief provides excellent contrast, making it ideal for finishing techniques like dark glazes or oils that highlight the interplay between the iron and timber textures. ⭐ Why this design is different: βœ”οΈ Sculpted for a natural manual carving look βœ”οΈ Strong depth, shadows & clean detailing βœ”οΈ Includes realistic wood grain texture for premium results βš™οΈ Machining Guidelines: Rough Machining: 6mm End Mill, 40% stepover Finish Machining: 3mm Ball Nose, 10% stepover Depth of cut: Adjust based on machine rigidity and material πŸ“¦ Delivery Instructions: After purchase, download the PDF from your order, open it and click the download button inside. Opens in Aspire, VCarve Pro, Carveco, ArtCAM and Fusion 360, and on any CNC router, 3D printer or laser that reads STL. No OBJ or DXF: a DXF holds flat 2D outlines and cannot carry a three-dimensional relief. Model size as supplied: 726 x 728 x 45 mm (28.6 x 28.6 in) Shape: square, 1.00:1 Relief depth: 45 mm, which is 6.2% of the width Mesh: 2,029,694 triangles, 96.8 MB Base: flat and at zero, ready to machine Recommended minimum carve size: 200 mm, where 98.6% of the fine detail survives a 3 mm ball nose. Smaller carves soften the finest details. Scale it to your own panel. Scaling all three axes together keeps the depth in proportion; scale Z on its own for a shallower carve.

Burn this design, or burn onto it

Laser Studio opens this STL with zero conversion and turns them into a ready-to-burn 3D-illusion engrave. Carving on your CNC instead? CNC Match lines up a name, a date or shading on a photo of the finished piece, so the laser burns right onto the carving.
